Although the credits on this LP say“Produced by El-Malo”, I definitely remember this as being produced by Cornelius (who appears in some of the photos), and Cornelius’ website claims credit too. Must just be that this is the German issue, from 1995, and they didn’t yet know who Cornelius was?

Debut album, tape and packaging appear to be in excellent condition (I’ll give it one more listen before shipping). Cover printed on textured paper (mustard color) with onionskin insert for track listing. Cassette appears to be chrome.

Spotless copy, other than slight discoloration (from age) at jacket opening. With insert

Cut out hole, initials written on front cover, bit of ring wear and edge wear. I think this copy plays pretty clean and I don’t think there are any noticeable pops, however, the top end feels a little fuzzy to me — my other copy (not for sale) is definitely sharper.

Vinyl plays excellent (shows a couple fingerprints and a couple very minor scuffs, no hairlines, no spindle marks). Sleeve has a cut out notch and many crease marks, moderate edge wear, but is clean and bright. No ring wear.

Scuffs and hairlines don’t look bad, but this copy plays worse than it looks: there’s a fair amount of static throughout. Get this copy as a listener to test the waters (it’s not horrible) and get a better copy later (as I did) or get it as a cheap gift for a friend. Gatefold cover has bumps and minor scuffs and a 3 to 4 cm bend on one corner. Nice liner notes, btw, which wouldn’t be too out of place on a Hepburns album. Did I mention that we love Gary here?

Moderate static, occasional pops. Hasn’t been cleaned by me, so it might improve if you’ve got a record vac. Bit of fading on cover, 5” seam split on top of back (it’s a gatefold cover), bumped/scuffed corners, bit of laminate peel on back.

Very clean (one light scuff noticed), black label. Cover bright and clean. No ring wear on front, very, very slight on back (very slight abrasion at bottom, otherwise noticeable at extreme angles). Slight edge bumping on all sides; barely visible sticker goo in one corner on back.

Very clean, yellow label DJ copy. Gatefold cover is bright and shiny with no ring wear but has slight bumps to corners and a thin strip on the back where the printed artwork has been torn away, revealing the board underneath. Affected area is small: less than 1” x ”.

The songs are “Locked In” and “Not Enough, Sorry!”. Sleeve printed in silver and blue on white paper.

Yes, the name of the Boyracer song is “Boyracer.” I can’t get this flexi to play perfectly. There is a small skip (or sound defect) in one place in the Boyracer track. It might just be dirt: I’ve tried cleaning it and the skip seems to have moved. I can’t get it to play perfectly. Maybe you can.

Flexi has a sleeve note obviously written under the spell of él Records. Contains an early version of “I Cry Because of You, Argentina,” different from the version(s) found on Choco’s album and the Tambourine Studios comp.

I’d keep this (and be satisfied with this copy) if it weren’t for my low tolerance for soundtrack LPs with multiple versions of a theme. (For what it’s worth, it’s a good theme. Trattoria fans might recognize it from Yoshie’s cover version).

Warped. I think this will play without skipping if your cartridge is set up around 3 grams, but it definitely throws mine (set a little under 2g) a few times. Reissue, spun a few times. Free with order of any other 12” vinyl, just ask for it.

Much touted collaboration between Patrick Adams and Peter Brown. For what it’s worth, I’m just put off by what others call hypnotic. Reissue, played twice.

aka Kotoba No Mae (Before the Words). 1996 album by Nobukazu Takemura and co. This is the original Japanese release, not the version on 99. Unusually thick jewelcase with nice booklet.

As with so many Beresford albums, the true highlight here is the one Beresford original (with lyrics by Andrew Brenner, of course) “Apprenez le Français avec Trenet”, a charming tour de force of Franglais. CD booklet has cut corner

Elaborate CD booklet uses a mix of translucent (i.e., onion skin) and opaque papers.

Garden of Delights presents...
23 track benefit compilation with tracks by folks from Momus to Mambo Taxi to Next Time Passions to Jowe Head. In excellent condition (vinyl and sleeve) except for a 3” seam split on the spine.

Steve Burt (with whom I once had lunch in Berkeley) wrote in Adventure Playground:
“Less of-its-time, more in touch with the Pop Past, and great all the way through is the almost-old-by-now benefit LP Garden of Delights put out, Seek Refuge from Your Intolerable Situation! The money goes to British battered-women's charities and the sense of what pop bands really matter is dead-on: the Television Personalities' "How Does It Feel" shows Daniel Treacy's usual gift for making a whole psychic world out of four lines and three chords: I think he wrote it for the comp, since it's about a battered woman, about, even, how hard it is to understand what it must be like to consider yourself "in love" with somebody who hits you. (The phone that rings at the end is part of the song-- through you can also take it to represent real people who need your help.) Almost as good as that wrenching contribution are the Pastels (covering Teenage Fanclub's "Guiding Star"-- Aggi sings, and sounds like Georgia Hubley), Honeybunch, & the best Linda Smith song I know-- and then there are crunchy avant-punk acts like Witchknot, and 1967-ish acts like Greece's extremely accomplished, nearly-groovy Next Time Passions (one of several bands Andrea & Fergus share with Ed).... I've been talking up this LP for over a year, and the truth is I'm sick of describing it; I don't think I'll ever be sick of admiring it, or of listening to it, even, all the way through.”

Slight ring bending at top of sleeve (of course, the Irdial design sleeve housing this 12” is designed to look like it’s worn). A mysterious 12” which I bought in 1994 but probably never played more than 5 times.

Clean, never mounted/displayed, but has been folded and has one small tear where two folds intersect. Despite these small flaws, this poster will look stunning when properly mounted. (My opinion being that, when mounted, small flaws add character to a poster. If in doubt, I suggest you question a professional framer on this point…).

Snapshot of a band in transition? I’m guessing that the band was moving from one place to another when it made this. There are a lot of great Spanish sounds on this one, ranging jangle and indiepop (sometimes with alternating boy/girl vocals, always a plus in my book) to more atmospheric pop (not shoegaze, but definitely experimental). They’ve got brass, they’ve got strings, and they’ve got electronics. It’s all very tasteful, though I think I would have liked it better if they had concentrated on one direction.

Matt Brubeck, Ralph Carney, et al. do an album of soundtrack theme covers. You can never get enough versions of the theme from Arabesque, right?

Angry prog/post punk in a chaotic and angular This Heat / Cold Storage vein from 1982. Some subset of this band went on to record an ace little EP as The Lowest Note on the Organ for the same label (which is how I came upon this LP). Bill Gilonis, Mick Hobbs, Tim Hodgkinson, Rick Williams, Catherine Janniaux with contributions from Chris Cutler among others. Vinyl plays great, sleeve is worn on the edges and partly taped at the top. Includes insert.

1987 LP combining some rather nice melodic elements with somewhat experimental and rougher electronics by Andrew Cox and David Elliott with guest appearances by Karl Blake and Malcolm Lane. Excellent condition, both cover and vinyl.

12-track German compilation from 1993 featuring mainly exclusive tracks by 5 Freunde, Merricks, Painting By Numbers, Huah!, Time Twisters, Blinzelbeeren, Fenton Weills, Licht, Der Profi, Belfounder, Family 5 and EA 80.

First album by Bob, from 1956. Great cover, cool songs too, and relatively rare. But the vinyl on this copy is in too poor condition to be worth selling online, so this copy is free (with any purchase of $10 worth of 12" vinyl—just ask for it). It plays without skips, but the surface noise is loud enough that you'll surely start looking for a better copy for playing.

The more pop, more funk, less jazz follow up to Rip Rig & Panic.

V. 2000 Remastered

Excellent compilation put together by French radio host Melanie Bauer featuring a handful of RK friends (Julien Ribot, Ignatus, Orwell) and a host of other excellent people. Many of the tracks are collaborations between the invited artists and Ms. Bauer, giving the disc more continuity than the average various artists outing, and so far as I know, the Orwell track is the only non-exclusive number. I tried to get this disc into distribution via RK last year, but someone at the label fell asleep, so all I have to sell is this one spare copy that I managed to get my hands on.

I saved this one from a bargain bin. Jacket has lots of bends and wear. Vinyl plays fine. This is a 3 sided record (i.e., the second 12" is intentionally blank on one side - very useful for setting the anti-skate on your turntable, btw).

An extra copy of an ace single featuring duet with Victoria Bergsman from the Concretes on the title track. B-sides are "Ancient Curse" and "All Those Expectations - weak mix".

Box set, all three discs plus the whopping fat booklet with Daniel Handler interviewing Stephen Merritt. Some sticker goo and modest scuffing on box; light scuffing on jewelcases. Discs, booklets and book all look very good.

1996 release on Tzadik. It's nice and I shouldn't sell this, but then I haven't listened to it in ages, so...

6 track ep of musique brut and noise experiments from 1987. Presumably self-released on Empty Records out of Nürnberg with the clever catalogue number MT-045 (get it?). Every track finishes with a lock groove. Not sure if the sleeve is hand painted or silkscreened, but it glows in the dark and has a 16 page booklet with words and (pasted in) pictures. A hell of a lot of work. First edition, numbered #161 of 200 on both booklet and record label. Vinyl in near pristine condition (I don't think I could have played this more than 5 times in the 18 or 19 years I've had it); outer sleeve shows slight curling at top and bottom, but otherwise as perfect as handmade gets.

The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. 2 CD version from 1997 with full soundtrack plus 6 bonus tracks (including Tony Bennett doing an English version). I adore the film (and the music) but find I can't actually listen to the music at home without my head being dominated by the film. Is that a bad thing? I don't know, but it doesn't work for me. (Strangely, I can listen to the Les demoiselles soundtrack at home, no problem...).

If you grew up in the US, you probably know him from the School House Rock cartoons ("Three is a Magic Number", etc). Bob was in charge of the project.

"Bosporus" b/w "Sop"

From 1986, this was (I believe) the first vinyl release on Jon Wozencroft's Touch label, which prior to this point had been cassette (and elaborately printed freeform materials) only. A-side track had been featured on Touch's Ritual Magnetic North cassette/book comp, but obviously warranted a separate vinyl release: caustic mantra, reeling and somewhat surreal in its non sequiturs, all set to one very sturdy overloaded beat. A classic, and I don't know why the hell I've let it slip into the my sale box, other than that I so rarely play it nowadays. Very slight yellowing of paper along sleeve opening, otherwise in splendid condition.

1987 album by Elli of Elli & Jacno fame, but on this LP she's working with Ramuntcho Matta (which is I why I bought this, as I'm a fan of Matta's tinkertoy instrumentals album in Crammed's Made to Measure Series. This album isn't tinkertoy...it's mid 80's jazzy pop. Not at all unpleasant to me, but not really my thing at the moment, either). Gatefold sleeve.

"Advance CD" copy. Has artwork in jewelcase, but probably not the same artwork as the regular release. Opening track on this one is an absolute ska-jazz or jazz-ska stomper (with two drumkits banging away, one on the right and one on the left). Wish I could just get the one song on a 7" (ok...at 7 minutes, it would be too long), since the rest of this album isn't my cuppa.

1986 soundtrack. Stanton Miranda (from Carter's late, great band on Factory, Thick Pigeon) turns up on some of the tracks.

Debut album, first edition. Not sure how they printed this, but it isn't boring old CMYK process like the later edition. Actually looks like it might have been silk-screened. The "nouvelle" definitely appears to be hand stamped. And the paper is a nice semi-rough stock with the odd bit of confetti fiber. All in all, simple, rough, but elegant. Somebody must have gotten sick of doing these by hand...

Third album by unclassifiable duo who started out on Nobukazu Takemura's Bellissima label before moving up to parent label Toy's Factory. Although this album is by far the most "mainstream" and rock oriented of the discs I've heard, there's still quite a bit of strangeness going on here...probably a testament to the fact that their second album was produced with Cornelius. The question is who influenced whom more?

w/ General Strike (= David Toop + Steve Beresford), Hula, SPK, and Sub Rosa's re-mixing of an archival recording of a Tibetan Buddhist evening ritual.
Bit more crackle and pop on this one than would be desirable. Not terrible and doesn't really affect the Hula and General Strike, whose tracks are louder, but you'll notice it a bit on the SPK and Tibetan Monks. Price reduced accordingly.
